Shareback: 'Tis the Season for Giving

Giving Tuesday was founded in 2012 by the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City. Giving Tuesday follows on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and kicks off the charitable season when many people focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

In our survey, we asked community members to highlight organizations in Calgary that they felt deserved more attention. Some participants noted that non-profits and charities often don’t have the budget or means to attract large numbers of donors and volunteers, so here are some of the charities that the community chose to highlight:

“We are looking at how to best support Children with hearing and speech challenges.  We believe in the Connect Society programming but know that can only support those children through kindergarten - so what is next.” - russ.tynan@gmail.com

“Momentum is an amazing organization who truly help people up rather than out.  They create environments for people to reduce or eliminate their own poverty, cycles of poverty, etc.  They help low-income families obtain the best resources and secure a better future for their children. Many small businesses have started in that organization as well!” - ChantellePinder

“Charities lack resources for many things.  Increasingly, they struggle with digital capabilities.  Managing their own systems, data, attracting attention/donations in a more digital world.  A non-profit like Ignitetech is trying to improve such capabilities for other non-profits.   It might be an interesting area to support.” -rogerm@fuzeium.com

We hope you take the time to research an organization you may not yet have heard of and perhaps even reach out and support them with a donation or by volunteering your time. The new year is a great time to get involved!

If you think there’s an organization that we may have missed, please mention them in the comments below.
